Stem cell-based therapy has made great achievements in treating a diversity of diseases and conditions. As a leading biotechnology company, the goal of Creative Biolabs is to provide global customers with the most affordable, high-quality stem cell-based therapy development service for autoimmune disease treatment.
In the human body, there is a powerful immune defense system that protects the body from invasion by infectious organisms, meanwhile, is tolerant of autologous cells or components. When the immune system is out of control, unable to differentiate the healthy components and harmful antigens, even attack its self-healthy cells or tissues, autoimmunity or autoimmune diseases will be caused. With the increasing morbidity, autoimmune disease has become one of the most incurable health problems. In the United States, autoimmune disease is the highest cause of morbidity in women, being one of the top 10 causes of death in women under the age of 65.
Current treatments can not completely cure autoimmune diseases, but control and relieve different symptoms, such as reduce pain and inflammation. Autoimmune disease treatments are broadly classified into conventional therapy (symptomatic or replacement therapy) and aggressive therapy (immunosuppressive or immune-modulation therapy). For example, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are usually used for controlling pain and inflammation, and immunosuppressive drugs for nonspecific reduction of the overactive immune response. New advancements in therapy development have been made for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including autoantigen-specific therapy, monoclonal or bispecific antibody therapy, co-stimulatory blockade, regulatory T cell therapy, stem cell-based therapy, and gene therapy.

Cell-based therapy, as one of the representatives of regenerative medicine, provides unlimited possibilities for the treatment of many intractable human diseases. Stem-cell therapy is treating or preventing diseases by using autologous or allogeneic stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (ESC), inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Currently, stem cell-based therapies are extensively being explored and developed to reverse tissue damage and treat autoimmune diseases. And several stem cell-based therapies are evaluated in different clinical trials for autoimmune disease treatment.
MSC-based therapy has been widely studied since the first in vitro culture in 1992. Up to now, a variety of MSC-based therapies have been tested for the treatment of autoimmune diseases on immune-mediated disease models, and many of which have registered for preclinical evaluations, such as experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Autoimmune disease treatment with HSC transplantation has been explored since the 1970s. The objective of HSC transplantation for autoimmune disease treatment is to destroy the auto-reactive immune cells and produce a normal functioning immune system. The success has been made using peripheral blood autologous HSC transplantation for the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
Stem cell-based therapies exhibit great potential and many advantages in treating a diversity of autoimmune diseases. However, the great differentiation and proliferation potential of these stem cell-based therapies also brings some security risks uniquely different from small molecule drugs and biological agents. Therefore, a series of toxicological and pharmacological experiments are needed to evaluate therapeutic outcomes and safety for these autoimmune disease therapies.
