The human body contains five vital organs for survival, of which the liver is the largest solid organ and gland only found in vertebrates. In the human body, the liver is located in the upper right-hand portion of the abdominal cavity, below the diaphragm and right kidney, covering the gallbladder. It is a dark reddish-brown wedge-shaped organ with two lobes of different sizes, weighing about 3 pounds. As the heaviest internal organ and the largest gland in the human body, the liver is widely involved in various important physiological and biological functions:

  1. Serving as a digestive organ. The liver produces bile, an alkaline fluid that breaks down fat in the small intestine during digestion;
  2. Serving as a metabolic organ. The liver is responsible for metabolism and/or detoxification, such as metabolism of vitamins, hormones, bilirubin, and drugs;
  3. Serving as an energy organ. The liver converts excess glucose in the body into glycogen for storage, and balances and produces glucose as needed;
  4. The liver plays a role in the synthesis of a variety of proteins, such as clotting factors, plasma proteins, immune factors, and angiotensinogen, as well as the production of red blood cells;
  5. The liver also is closely associated with blood functions, including hematopoiesis, coagulation, and blood supply.
